SPIRTUAL DEVELOPMENT
At Ranelagh, spiritual development is embedded across all curriculum areas and through the wider life of the school. Inspired by the ministry of Jesus, we create opportunities for students to reflect, question, wonder and grow in wisdom and understanding.
At Ranelagh, we understand spirituality through three simple ideas:
Looking in — Dignity
Understanding yourself, your thoughts, feelings, and values, while recognising your inherent worth and dignity. Every person is uniquely created in God's image and is therefore valued, respected and loved.
Reaching out — Compassion
Building positive relationships, caring for others, and acting with kindness. Inspired by Jesus' ministry to those who were marginalised, vulnerable, and oppressed, we seek to serve others, strengthen our community, and help everyone flourish together.
Looking up — Hope
Noticing beauty, asking big questions, exploring faith, and finding meaning and purpose. Through the Christian story, we find hope and aspiration, rooted in God's promises and the hope of salvation, which encourages us to look forward with confidence and purpose.
This framework helps us grow as individuals, support one another as a community, and deepen our understanding of ourselves, others, and God.
Students are encouraged to:
- Reflect on their own beliefs, values and identity
- Encounter awe and wonder through learning experiences across subjects
- Explore beauty, creativity and human achievement
- Engage with ethical questions and issues of justice
- Develop empathy, compassion and respect for others
- Understand their responsibility as members of a wider community
Spiritual development is fostered through classroom dialogue, literature, the arts, scientific discovery, historical reflection, outdoor learning, collective worship, service and enrichment. Students are encouraged not only to acquire knowledge, but also to reflect deeply on what it means to live well alongside others and contribute positively to society.
Education is not primarily preparation for something else. It is an encounter with the best of what has been thought, said, created and discovered. It’s an invitation to participate in the ongoing conversation about the world.
